A worm gearbox is a gear arrangement in which a worm (a screw-shaped gear) meshes with a worm wheel. Together, the worm and worm wheel are called a worm drive. The worm drive is compact and can provide a large speed reduction, making it useful in applications like speed reducers, elevators and automotive power steering .
