Variable ND (Neutral Density) filter is a type of lens filter that allows photographers and videographers to control the amount of light entering the lens by rotating a ring on the filter itself, effectively adjusting its opacity between a set range, typically 1 to 9 stops of light reduction. Made from two stacked polarizing filters, a Variable ND offers the convenience of adjusting light levels on the fly without having to change filters, enabling cinematic motion blur in bright conditions and maintaining desired aperture for depth of field. However, they can produce an "X" pattern or vignetting at their maximum density settings, requiring the user to dial back the strength slightly for a clean image.
