Water quality varies significantly across Kenya depending on the source. Municipal tap water, borehole water, and rainwater harvesting systems can contain sediment, chlorine, bacteria, heavy metals, and dissolved minerals. A water filter removes or reduces these contaminants, providing safer and better-tasting drinking water for your household.
The most common household filter type. Activated carbon (charcoal) absorbs chlorine, pesticides, and organic compounds that cause bad taste and odour. Carbon filters are effective for municipal tap water that has already been treated but has a chlorine taste. They do not remove bacteria or dissolved minerals effectively on their own.
Use a porous ceramic element with microscopic pores that physically block bacteria, protozoa, and sediment. Ceramic filters are effective, affordable, and do not require electricity or pressure. They are widely used in Kenyan households and are well-suited for treating borehole and rainwater. Many ceramic filters include a silver coating that further inhibits bacterial growth.
Force water through a semi-permeable membrane that removes up to 99% of dissolved solids, heavy metals, bacteria, and viruses. RO systems produce the purest water but require adequate water pressure, electricity for the pump, and produce waste water (typically 2-3 litres of waste for every 1 litre of filtered water). Best suited for areas with seriously contaminated or high-TDS water.
Use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms without adding chemicals or altering taste. UV purifiers are effective against biological contaminants but do not remove sediment or chemicals. They work best as a final stage after sediment and carbon pre-filtration.
Multi-stage filter systems that work using gravity alone -- no electricity or water pressure needed. Water is poured into the top chamber, passes through filter candles or cartridges, and collects in the lower chamber. Popular brands like Pureit and locally made ceramic pot filters are common in Kenya. Practical for areas without reliable electricity or piped water.
Replace filter cartridges according to the manufacturer's schedule, even if the water still seems fine. Overused filters lose effectiveness and can actually harbour bacteria. Clean ceramic filter candles by gently scrubbing with a soft brush under running water when flow rate decreases. Mark the installation date on each new cartridge so you remember when it is due for replacement.
