Description:
Axonopus compressus is a creeping, stoloniferous grass that forms a dense mat, typically growing up to 15 cm tall, although new shoots can reach 50 cm. It has broad, blunt leaf blades and flattened stems.
Habitat and Use:
This species is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and has been introduced to the Eastern Hemisphere. It is widely used as a lawn and forage grass, particularly in moist, low-fertility soils and shaded areas.
Characteristics:
It thrives in humid areas with annual temperatures between 17°C and 27°C and rainfall exceeding 750 mm. While it's a good ground cover for preventing soil erosion, its low-growing nature makes it less suitable for cut-and-carry systems for fodder conservation.
