Steps for Making Napier Grass Silage
1. Harvest Napier grass when it is 3–4 months old
Cut it at a height of about 5 cm from the ground
2. Chop the grass into small pieces (2–5 cm)
3. Wilting (Optional, but Recommended)
If the grass has high moisture content (>70%), spread it under shade for 4–6 hours to reduce moisture to about 60–65%.
This prevents excessive water, which can cause poor fermentation.
4. Adding Fermentation Enhancers (Optional)
Molasses (1 kg mixed with 3 liters of water per 100 kg of chopped grass).
Maize bran or cassava flour (2–3 kg per 100 kg of grass).
5. Pack the chopped grass into a silo (pit, plastic drum, or silage bag).
Press it tightly to remove air and ensure anaerobic fermentation.
6. Cover the silage with plastic sheeting
7. Fermentation and Storage
Leave the silage to ferment for 21–30 days
