Peat moss is a dark brown, fibrous material formed from the partially decomposed organic matter of sphagnum moss and other plants in waterlogged peat bogs. It is lightweight, spongy, and has a high water absorption capacity, making it a popular soil amendment for improving soil structure, moisture retention, and aeration in gardening. Peat moss is also naturally acidic, which is beneficial for certain acidic-loving plants, but it lacks sufficient nutrients to be used as a complete soil media on its own.
