The Kayamba is a unique hand-shaken idiophone constructed by binding together dual parallel layers of natural reeds or cane stalk tubes using sturdy fiber string. The hollow center cavity of the raft structure is enclosed with small organic dried seeds (such as green grams/choroko or red meto seeds) or tiny pebbles. A signature center strip running lengthwise through the wooden frame lets musicians strike the instrument with their thumbs while shaking the body from side to side. This dual-action design delivers a crisp, rhythmic sound mimicking ocean waves or spilling water, traditionally used to anchor ceremonial dances, church songs, and sacred folk music.
