Because the element is screwed directly into a water tank or boiler, the heated metal loop is completely submerged in water. Heat moves from the outer tube into the surrounding water via conduction. As the water immediately touching the element heats up, it expands, becomes less dense, and rises. Cooler water moves in to take its place, creating convection currents that eventually warm the entire tank.
