How a Level Staff Works (Step by Step)
1. Setting Up the Level
• The level instrument is placed on a tripod.
• It is leveled so the line of sight is perfectly horizontal.
2. Positioning the Staff
• The staff is placed vertically on the point whose height is to be measured.
• The bottom of the staff rests on the ground or benchmark.
• The staff must be held straight (vertical).
3. Taking the Reading
• The surveyor looks through the telescope of the level.
• The horizontal crosshair cuts the staff at a certain graduation.
• This value is the staff reading.
