Batian is an improved Arabica variety by CRI Kenya (2010), named after Mt. Kenya's Batian Peak. Cross of SL28/SL34/Ruiru 11, it has SL28 cup quality with disease resistance.
*Traits:* Tall tree with deep roots (drought tolerant), coppery bronze young leaves, large elliptical deep-red fruits, very large AA beans.
*Advantages:*
- Resistant to Coffee Berry Disease & Leaf Rust, cuts spray cost 30%
- Early maturity: bears in 18-24 months
- High yield: up to 5 spacing (1,905 trees/ha)
- Grows countrywide, best above 1000m
- Excellent specialty taste, fetches high price.
Vs Ruiru 11: Taller (needs more pruning), better taste, breeds true from seed. Price: Ksh 50-100 at KALRO/CRI certified nurseries.
