The thermocouple in a gas brooder serves as a safety device that monitors the temperature of the flame. It works by generating a small electric current when heated by the pilot flame. This current keeps the gas valve open, allowing gas to flow to the burner.
If the flame goes out (or the temperature drops), the thermocouple cools down and stops generating the electric current, causing the gas valve to close. This prevents gas from leaking into the brooder, ensuring a safer environment for the animals being heated.
