The basic principle behind most pulley removers is to apply controlled, even pressure to pull the pulley off the shaft without damaging either component.
Preparation:
Lubrication: It's often helpful to apply penetrating oil (like WD-40 or a "nut cracker") to the shaft and pulley joint and let it sit for a while to help loosen any rust or corrosion.
Loosen Set Screws: Crucially, if the pulley has any set screws that secure it to the shaft, these must be loosened or removed before attempting to pull.
Assess the Pulley: Determine if the pulley has a hub, keyway, or if it's directly mounted. This will influence the best type of puller to use.
Positioning the Puller:
The puller's jaws (or other gripping mechanism) are positioned to grip the outer rim or a specific lip of the pulley.
