A Back Sight (BS) is the first staff reading taken after setting up the level instrument.
It is taken on a point whose elevation (RL) is already known, such as a Benchmark (BM).
Purpose of Back Sight
• To determine the Height of Instrument (HI)
• To transfer the known elevation to the level line of sight
How Back Sight Reading is Taken
1. Set up and level the instrument.
2. Place the level staff vertically on a benchmark or known point.
3. Read the value where the crosshair cuts the staff.
4. This reading is the Back Sight (BS).
Formula Used
{Height of Instrument (HI)} = {RL of BM} + {BS}
