A laser distance meter (also called a laser tape measure or rangefinder) is a portable electronic measuring tool that calculates precise distances using a focused laser beam. It replaces traditional tape measures by allowing single-person, long-distance measurements instantly with the push of a button. Emission: The device emits a finely focused pulse of laser light toward a target object (like a wall or post). Reflection: The laser dot hits the surface and reflects back to the optical receiver lens on the device. Calculation: Most commercial meters use Phase Shift Measurement—comparing the phase shift of the emitted and reflected light waves to calculate exact distance within milliseconds. High-end long-range units use Time-of-Flight (ToF), measuring the exact microsecond elapsed time for the beam to bounce back.
