Working Principle: The total station combines angular measurements and distance measurements to determine the exact position of a point in three-dimensional space (X, Y, Z coordinates). Here's how it works: 1.Angle Measurement: The theodolite measures the horizontal and vertical angles to the point of interest. 2.Distance Measurement: The EDM sends a laser or infrared beam to the prism (or target), which reflects the signal back to the instrument. By calculating the time it takes for the signal to return, the instrument determines the distance. 3.Triangulation: Using trigonometric formulas, the instrument calculates the position of the point relative to the instrument’s location. If the position of the total station is known (e.g., via GPS), absolute coordinates (latitude, longitude, and elevation) can be calculated.
