Snake Eater is a stealth-action video game set during the 1960s Cold War that follows FOX operative Naked Snake (who would become Big Boss) on a mission to infiltrate the Soviet jungle to rescue a rocket scientist and stop the Shagohod, a nuclear-equipped weapon. The game introduces unique gameplay mechanics like a deep camouflage and survival system with food and injuries, Close Quarters Combat (CQC) for hand-to-hand fighting, and acts as a chronological prequel to the entire Metal Gear saga, focusing on the origins of Big Boss.
