The safest and reliable way to make borehole water drinkable is a staged treatment process: Sediment removal then chemical media-based correction for specific contaminants (iron, manganese, hardness, fluoride, followed by reverse osmosis to strip dissolved salts and microorganisms and finally a disinfection or remineralization step before storage. RO alone can achieve excellent results, but it works best and lasts longer when the water reaching the membranes has already been pretreated.
