How to Read a Levelling Staff 1. Hold the Staff Correctly • Staff must be vertical (use a staff bubble if available). • Bottom of staff placed firmly on the ground or point. 2. Look Through the Level • Focus the telescope. • The horizontal crosshair will intersect the staff markings. • Read the number exactly at the crosshair. Understanding Staff Markings Most metric staffs are marked like this: • Big numbers → metres (1, 2, 3, ...) • Bold divisions → decimetres (0.1 m) • Small divisions → centimetres (0.01 m) • Some staffs use E-type markings for easy reading Example of a Staff Reading If the crosshair cuts the staff at: • Metre = 1 m • Decimetre = 0.3 m • Centimetre = 5 cm 👉 Staff reading = 1.35 m
