Floating (with a pan): The operator first uses a large, flat pan attached to the machine to smooth and level the surface of the concrete after it has been screeded and has partially set. This initial stage helps to compact the concrete, remove surface irregularities, and push down any large aggregates.
Troweling (with blades): Once the concrete has hardened slightly, the pan is removed and the adjustable-pitch blades are used. By increasing the angle of the blades with each pass, the operator can achieve a progressively smoother, more polished, and hardened finish.
