Lightweight: Because it is mostly air, the material is extremely light, which makes it easy to handle and reduces shipping costs for packaging applications. Excellent Thermal Insulation: The trapped air pockets are poor conductors of heat, making it an effective insulator. This is why it is used for building insulation and keeping food and drinks hot or cold. The thermal resistance is measured by its "R-value." Shock Absorbent: The cellular structure allows it to absorb and dissipate energy, protecting fragile items during transport. This is a primary reason for its use in packaging. Moisture Resistant: While not completely waterproof, the closed-cell structure of XPS makes it highly resistant to water absorption, which is critical for insulation in building foundations. Even EPS does not readily absorb water.
